The Chronicles of Kilimanjaro

free flying across the African skies

A Throwback to 2011 - Our First Paraglide Kilimanjaro Expedition

by Kyle O'Donoghue

Don’t just dream it, DO IT! The magic happened on 16 September 2011 – a dynamic team of Southern African adventurers successfully paraglided from the summit of Kilimanjaro – the very first legal flights. The team was made up of Andrew Smith (South Africa), Chris Lotter (Namibia) and tandem pilot Pierre Carter (South Africa) with passenger Marianne Schwankhart (South Africa). Thank you to the Tanzanian Authorities for making this possible!

Other team members on this expedition were Jeff Wishnie (USA), James Braid (SA), Jeremy Holdcroft (SA), Alistair Stuart (SA), Linda Willemse (SA), Guy Pitman (SA), Samantha Braid (SA), Kyle O’Donoghue (SA), Matthew Rosmarin (SA), Samuel Rousseau (NAM), Dawson Chonjo (TZ), Steven Mtui (TZ), Joel Maya (TZ) & Joseph Bareli (TZ) along with 55 other mountain crew inclusive of porters, cooks etc.

Linda Willemse began the negotiations for the rights to legally paraglide from Kilimanjaro back in 2001. Pierre Cater later joined forces with Linda to complete flying goals for his 7Summit7Flights quest. Official permission was received by the Tanzanian authorities in 2010. A short year later the whole team found themselves standing on the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, ready to make paragliding history.

Since then we have worked closely with Tanzanian National Parks and aviation authorities over the years to put procedures in place that enables Paraglide Kilimanjaro to take like-minded adventurers to experience the highest top to bottom free flight on earth – Africa awaits!
